Who we are. Yap is made by troubles.studio (Robert Myrsäter). Contact: hello@myrsater.xyz.

What Yap is. A language-learning app: you talk with an AI tutor, keep flashcards, and can pair with one friend to share streaks.

Signing in. You sign in with Google or Apple. We receive your name, email address and (from Google) your profile photo. During the beta, your email has to be on our invite list for the app to work.

Voice sessions. When you start a voice session, your microphone audio is streamed live to our AI provider (OpenAI) so the tutor can hear and answer you. Yap does not record or store the audio. The text transcript of the conversation is stored in your account so you can review it and turn words into flashcards. OpenAI's own data policy applies to what it processes.

Text sessions, translations, flashcards. Messages you type, the translations you ask for, and the flashcards the app creates for you are sent to the AI provider to generate answers and stored in your account.

Activity and streaks. Yap keeps a daily count of cards reviewed, seconds spoken and chat turns to show your streak. If you pair with a friend, they can see your name, photo, language and this daily activity — nothing else — and you see theirs. Either of you can leave the pair at any time.

Inviting a friend from your contacts. The app uses the system contact picker: it only ever receives the one contact you choose, uses their number to open a message you send yourself, and stores nothing.

Your tutor's settings. Language, level, voice, personality, shape and colour are stored in your account, and the shape and colour are also cached on your device so the app opens in your style.

Diagnostics. Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics) include your user id so we can find and fix problems. We use no advertising or tracking SDKs.

Where data lives. Google Firebase (authentication, database, functions — EU region for the database), OpenAI (processing of session audio and text).

Deleting your data. Sign out and ask us to delete your account; we remove your profile, sessions, cards, activity and pair. Leaving a pair removes your partner's access immediately.

Children. Yap is not directed at children under 13.

Changes. We update this page when the app's data handling changes and note the date above.
